The Election: It’s About More Than McCain and Obama

vote button

Mention “election” to most people, and they’ll be glad to give their opinion about the four candidates in the race for President and Vice President. Is John McCain the decisive, experienced hand we need, or a proponent of continuing the policies that have gotten us into the mess we’re in now? Is Barack Obama an agent of national unity, and of welcome change, or an inexperienced, radical ultra-liberal? How do you feel about Sarah Palin? Or Joe Biden?

At AAFR, we’re non-partisan, so we’re not going to answer any of these questions. We will, however, remind you of some important issues that will need to be addressed over the next few years:

  • How can Social Security’s funding and benefit structure be reformed in a fair, and viable, way?
  • Will corporate pension plans be kept safe from Wall Street raiders?
  • Will 401(k) plans, IRAs, and similar programs be able to continue providing the tax and other benefits they provide now?
  • Will Medicare still be available when baby boomers retire? Will there still be serious gaps in the coverage?

These questions will not be decided by the President, but by the House and Senate (although the President does have veto power). It’s therefore important not only to choose wisely when voting in the presidential race, but in congressional races as well.

Before you go to the polls, inform yourself as to your district and state’s candidates’ stands on these issues. Regardless of your own party affiliation, don’t just vote for someone because they have an “R” or “D” after their name, or because you like the presidential candidate of their party. Make sure they’ve earned your vote!

  • Thanks for the reminder. OBAMA is definitely better for Social Security. He’ll need a democrat congress to do anything, however.
